Safari to see gentle giants
Elephant gathering is one of the most spectacular natural events in the world and Minneriya national park is one of the best places in the country to experience that.
Minneriya is a protected wildlife park in the dry zone. Minneriya reservoir adds more beauty to the park. Around 300 elephants gather at Minneriya reservoir during the dry season from August to September. These giants are not only from the Minneriya park, but also from the Wasgamuwa National Park. Elephants play with their members from other herds, splashing water with their trunks. This sight is beautiful to see.
The dry season, is reckoned to be the best time to visit. However, it’s also possible to see large numbers of elephants here at other times of year too.
Although elephants are the reason for many travelers to visit the park, Minneriya is rich with other species also. More than 160 species of birds and mammals can be seen within the park. Some are endemic to Sri Lanka. Saltwater crocodiles and other reptiles add another dimension to this rich ecosystem.
