Trip to Polonnaruwa

Walk among the history of Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa was the 2nd kingdom of Sri Lanka 800 years ago. At that time it was the main commercial and religious centre in the country. The glorious stories of that era can be still found in its archaeological places. It gives a pretty good idea about how this kingdom looked in its days.

Same like Anuradhapura, you’ll find so many places with archaeological and historical value. You will be amazed to explore this great city with stupas, old temples, ponds, tanks, ancient structures, tombs and statues.

Most of these places are protected within an archaeological site in north of the modern town. Polonnaruwa Museum gives detailed displays about the ancient kingdom and its historical value.

Trips Lanka will not forget to take you to Gal Vihara and there are more than twenty other places with historical importance within this area.

Gal Vihara is home to three magnificent Buddha statues that are carved in granite. Serene beauty of these statues will give you an enlighten feeling. Facial features and figure of the Buddha are delicately carved in to the mass of stone.

Parakrama Samudra, Somawathiya , Medirigiriya Watadageya and  Dimbulagala are other significant places that you should visit in Polonnaruwa.

Polonnaruwa is also close to Habarana, Kaudulla and Minneriya national parks.
